Fighting Stance
The Fighting Stance is the bladed, side-on guard posture from which strikes, kicks, and defenses are launched in sparring. I haven’t been able to find an equivalent Japanese name for this exact stance — it may be an American Karate variant. It positions the body sideways to the opponent to present a narrower target, while keeping both hands up to defend the head and ribs.
How to Perform the Fighting Stance
1. Starting Stance
- Typically begin from an attention stance, balanced and relaxed.
2. Step Back and Blade the Body
- Step back with either the left or right foot, turning your body sideways so the feet are roughly parallel.
- Continue to look toward the front so your eyes remain on the opponent.
3. Position the Back Hand
- The back hand comes up near your face, between the eye and the ear, with the elbow tight to protect the ribs.
4. Position the Lead Hand
- The lead hand is held in a fist down by your side, ready to strike or defend.
